Katie's Cards launches a Facebook Application! 2011.12.15

Hi all,

We have just launched our new Facebook application!

This fantastic new feature allows you to connect to your Facebook account and send ecards to your Facebook friends as well as access birthday reminders from Facebook!

The application is available to both members and non-members. Non-members can send cards from the 'Free e cards' category of the website and members can send cards from any category.

To use the application as a member to send e cards all you have to do is select an ecard from any category to send, and when you get to the 'send' page you will see a Facebook button with 'Click here to post on Facebook'. When you click this button you will be asked to log into your Facebook account, once you have done this you will see a list of your Facebook friends and you can choose who you want to send the card to. You can post the card on the recipients profile page or send them a message to their Facebook inbox.

To use this application as a non-member you can select any e card from the 'Free ecards' section and follow the same instructions as above.

To see your birthday reminders, all you have to do is click on the 'View your Facebook Reminders' button on the Katie's Cards homepage. You will be asked to log into your Facebook account and then you will see a list of your Facebook friends who have birthdays coming up which you can then send a birthday e card to using Facebook or in the traditional way, by sending them an email.

This application has been developed by us to enhance your user experience. We hope that you enjoy using it!

Please comment if you need any help with using the application!

Why don't you give it a try now and see how good you are? You can try it out by clicking here.

What do you think of it?

It joins our popular 'Turkey Breakout' series. We always get very positive comments about them, but thought it would be good to make an interactive game ecard this time. I think it is a great option to send to children or those who like games and acts as a card and a gift in one!

Poor Plum (my mischievous Jack Russell) injured her ear. 2011.11.28

Hi all,

What a weekend! We had an eventful one after taking Plum out for a weekend walk. She ran off and went missing for an hour and whilst I desperately tried to find her, she injured her ear. The poor thing had a tear in her ear and so I had to rush her straight to the vet.

The poor thing had to have a bandage bless her.

She is fine now thankfully and will only need a bandage for a day more but she gave us a bit of a scare. She is so mischievous that little dog of ours, though not as mischievous as Fenton – the famous dog who's video has gone viral on You tube!

Have you got any stories about your pets you want to share?

New Thanksgiving and Christmas Ecards From Katie's Cards. 2011.11.23.

2011.11.23

Many consumers are opting to send animated e cards this Christmas because they are very cost effective and eco-friendly which means there is now a demand for a wider range of e card styles to choose from. To satisfy this need, Katie's Cards are continuing to create a large variety of styles suitable for all ages, tastes and occasions and have just released 3 new seasonal and Christmas e cards:

Thanksgiving e cards

The beautiful new Thanksgiving card is called ‘Leaf Waltz’ and is a tasteful animation of fallen autumn leaves dancing around in the winter wind. The animation is accompanied by Sonata a Quattro No.3 in C Major, composed by Gioachino Rossini, making it the perfect greeting to send to your adult friends and family to wish them a happy Thanksgiving.

Also new, the ‘Turkey Shoot’ e card game has a completely different feel. An ideal e card to send to any fun-loving friends or relatives, the game is set to fun country music and involves the player shooting Thanksgiving turkey's as they jump from behind obstacles. Try out this card here.

The new cards join the rest of the Thanksgiving collection which includes a wide range of cards ranging from the humorous, to the traditional and modern in style. View the Thanksgiving collection here.

New Christmas e cards

‘Runaway Turkey’ is a new Christmas e card game in which the player has to help an escaping turkey from the clutches of a hungry farmer that is chasing it by jumping over obstacles which appear in its path. This is a fun and light hearted e card game and a great way to wish loved ones a merry Christmas.. Try out this e card game here.

Christmas tips 3: Decorations. 2011.11.21.

Hi all,

Today I am giving you some of my Christmas decorating tips. Please share them with your friends and let me know if you have any additions to the list by posting a comment!

How to create easy, cheap and inventive Christmas decorations:
  • Before you start doing anything make sure you buy lots of festive looking ribbons. You can pick up large reels of ribbon from most sewing shops for a small cost but if you can't find one nearby, then go online! Ribbons are brilliant for decorating many things including presents, ornaments, fireplaces etc. You can also pick up some buttons for decoration.
  • Don't by ready-made candle decorations - make them yourself. Buy plain candles and add your own holly, ribbons and mistletoe. This is a much cheaper way to decorate and you will be creating something only you have on display!
  • Collect pine cones, branches and holly from outside.
  • Make your own Christmas wreath using the branches you collected, just tie both ends together with string and add your desired decorations like ribbon, tinsel, ornaments, spray paint etc.
  • Spray your pine cones silver or gold (or another colour) and either display them in a bowl or large glass vase or attach string to them and hand them off your tree.
  • Lay holly and branches on your fireplace.
  • Buy a roll of brown paper and wrap your presents with it. Use your beautiful ribbons to make the wrapping pretty along with sprigs of holly and mistletoe and cinnamon sticks!
  • Save money and the environment by sending Christmas ecards this year. Send unlimited cards for a small subscription fee and save on average over £15 on traditional greetings cards!
Please share these tips and let me know if you have any to add to the list!

Christmas tips 2: Planning your Christmas lunch. 2011.11.18

Hi all,

Here is the 2nd in my list of Christmas tips. Today I am looking at the good old Christmas lunch and things that you can do to try and elliminate the stress that it can cause.

Here are some of my tips which can help it go smoothly. I hope you find them useful and please post a comment if you want to add any of your tips!
  • Write down a list of your Christmas lunch guests.
  • Try to estimate how much food you will need per person and then estimate the cost of the food.
  • Once you know what you will be eating, make sure to order your meat well in advance to avoid di disappointments.
  • To reduce the overall cost, give each guest an item to bring along to the lunch, for example each guest could bring one part of the meal or each guest could bring one bottle of wine they like.
  • Make sure to pick up all of the non-perishables on the list very soon after writing your shopping list. This means that you only have to shop for the perishables at a later date, but try to avoid doing his on Christmas eve as supermarkets are a nightmare! If possible, order your shopping online - it is a hassle free way of getting the things you need though you do need to remember to do it in time.
  • Think about how you want your day to pan out and then plan what time you want your guests to arrive. I like to give the family some time to relax in the morning so if we're having guests, I usually ask them to arrive for 12.
  • Choose the time that you want to serve food by and then plan backwards, making a day timetable as you go.
  • Delegate, delegate, delegate! Give each of your guests a task to complete.
  • If you want to be waited on hand and foot, book a restaurant! (but remember to do it early!).
  • Invite your guests to your special lunch using a Christmas ecard.

Happy birthday Prince Charles! 2011.11.14

Hello all,

Did you know that today is Prince Charles' 63rd birthday?

Well I couldn't let it go by without wishing him a very happy birthday as he has contributed soo much to society today. The Princes Trust, which was set up by him in 1976 is now the leading charity for disadvantaged youths in the UK and does a huge amount of work.

I know he is a keen gardener, so if I was his friend, I would definitely send him the 'Gardener' birthday ecard from our collection.

Walking in Hebden Bridge. 2011.11.10

Hi all,

A few weeks ago we took a short trip to visit my brother in Hebden Bridge for the weekend. The area is so beautiful that I just had to take some pictures of the scenes whilst we were out walking that I thought I would share with you of us and the countryside:

<img src="filename.gif" alt="Ecards"<img src="filename.gif" alt="e cards"

Things are getting very busy here at Katie's Cards as we lead up to Christmas and we are making great headway on our new Christmas ecards which I hope you will love!

Here is a little reminder of an old Christmas ecard:

Last post dates for 2011 - 2011.11.09

Hi everyone,

For those of you in the UK, here is Royal Mail's last postage dates for 2011. As you can see, some of the dates have passed or are very near! But don't worry, as e cards can be sent in a matter of minutes, you can still send all of your loved ones a Christmas e card that they will receive on the day you schedule delivery! This is a brilliant reason to choose to send ecards to your loved ones this year.

Another great reason to send your loved ones a Christmas ecard is that they can save you money. It costs 46p for a first class stamp in the UK, so if you have over 30 Christmas cards to send, this is going cost you at least double the cost of a Katie's Cards subscription, on top of the price of your Christmas cards. A subscription to Katie's Cards only cost £7 and for that you can send as many cards as you like for a whole year!

Hi there,

We have a brand new Thanksgiving e card on the website for you to send! We hope you like it!

This new ecard was inspired by the amazing season that Thanksgiving celebrations are held in. The animation shows the beautiful fallen orange, red and brown leaves falling and then being caught by the wind and twirling around performing a waltz.

Set to the beautiful notes of Rossini's Sonata a Quattro No.3 in C Major, our new Thanksgiving ecard is perfect to send to all of your loved ones.

Here is a preview of the card below. Let me know what you think!

Katie's Cards website development

Hi everuone!

It is freezing here and feeling very wintery indeed! I love this time of year but do wish it was a little warmer for my walks with Plum!

Thanksgiving, and Christmas are getting very close. Have you started doing your planning yet?

Here at Katie's Cards we have been doing a lot to prepare for the festive season. We are about to launch the new developments on our website which have been added to help you with the festive planning!
These developments include some brand new features which have been designed to make your life a bit easier. There is a new 'bulk upload' tool which allows you to add up to 100 contacts to your address book in one swift go as well as the addition of a Facebook application which allows you to connect with your Facebook profile to send your Facebook friends e cards and gives your birthday reminders.

Another great way to stay on top of the planning this year this festive season is to pre-schedule your ecards to be delivered on a date of your choice in the future. This can be done from your personal membership account and it is so easy and quick - exactly what we all need at this time of year! E cards are a great way to send personal greetings to loved ones across the globe as they are quick to organise, cheap to send and environmentally friendly.

Please do let me know if you have any questions or need any help with your account. Remember, we are always happy to help you get the most out of your Katie's Cards membership!

I hope your Bonfire night goes with a BANG!

Hi everyone,

Its very close to the end of the working week and I am very looking forward to having a nice relaxing weekend after a busy week working on some new Christmas e cards and Thanksgiving e cards.

As its Bonfire night this Saturday we've been invted to go to a party at a friends house who live near Kew Gardens. I am very much looking forward to it as lots of our friends will be there with their children and there will be lots of delicious Bonfire night food!

I think fireworks make everyone feel excited, especially children and that’s why I made a birthday e card with fireworks on when we first started out. If you haven't seen it, then take a look here.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Let your kids help with Thanksgiving preparations.

Hello,

As I am a mum myself, I know all too well that organising big events with kids can be tricky.

I have always been a firm believer that getting them involved in the event is the best way to keep them entertained. After all, you not only entertain them, but you also get a little help that you didn't have before!

If your children are a bit older, then it is nice to get them involved with the preparation of the food but you might need an alternative and that is why I was delighted to come across these:

Make Thanksgiving party hats

Thanksgiving place cards

Not only will they help to give them something fun to do, but the end result will be lovely!

Please let me know if you try either of them and do send pictures if you would like to see them on the blog!

Hebdon Bridge trip at half term

Hello,

You may or may not know, but its half term for most schools in England at the moment and so we thought we would take advantage of the kids having some free time and take a trip up to see my brother, who lives in the beautiful Hebdon Bridge in Yorkshire.

Hebdon Bridge is a lovely place to go for a weekend break as its set in the Yorkshire moors so is handy for lovely walks. Its a small, but very pretty town with some nice shops, pubs and restaurants set amongst the old architecture, the cobbled streets and the lovely canal, so it the perfect place to have a little break.

I found the towns website and I thought that some of you might like to look at it - Hebdon Bridge website. Its got lots of handy information on it on upcoming events, the history of Hebdon Bridge, where to eat, where to stay and other really useful tourist info. It also has a picture gallery where I found some pretty pictures to share:

Lovely pumpkin soup and some pumpkin carving tips!

Hello!

As halloween is approaching, I have to admit that I am getting very excited! This might be because we are almost about to add the new Halloween ecard to the website.

Now that the kids are older, we don't do trick or treating or any of the other halloween parties that we used to. This does not stop me from carving a pumpkin or two though! I loved keeping this tradition going and each year I carve 2 or 3 to light up with candles on our doorstep, in our garden and sometimes in the house too. You can make them last up to 10 days if you soak the carved carcass in beach for 8 hours and keep spraying them with a mild bleach solution. One of the reasons I love to keep this tradition going is because I love making pumpkin soup with the carved flesh. I found this great recipe that you might like - take a look here.

Its really delicious. If you try it then please do let me know what you think and send me your top tips to share with other readers!

How do you celebrate Halloween?

Hi all,

Halloween is almost here!

Our new Halloween e card is nearly ready and will be on the website very soon!

I find Halloween a magical time of year it has always been one of my favourites. When our children were young, I would indulge myself and we would always plan a big party for Molly and Joe. We'd spend all week planning and carving our pumpkins and then the whole day decorating the house ready for the party.

We planned games that we could play like apple bobbing and even made one up that became a favourite with the kids in which we tied string around the middle of ringed doughnuts and tie them to the tree outside. The aim of the game was to eat a whole one without using your hands and we all had great fun trying! Once all the games were over, we would all be off trick or treating around the neighbourhood.

Here are some old photographs I found of the parties:

What do you do for halloween?

only 9 weeks until Chrismas...

Picture 1

Hello,

Oh no. I was just planning the Christmas ecards schedule and did a quick count of how many weeks until Christmas.

9.

9 weeks!

How did this happen? It was only just summer!

Now I have to start planning gifts, where and who we will be celebrating with and what we'll be eating. Though there is one thing that I always look forward to - the Katies Cards christmas party! We're not a big team (as you know) so we often do a joint gathering with the other small businesses who share our little terraced building. There's only 3 people extra, but it means that our meagre little celebration of 3 turns into 6 (and this year it will be 7 with Racheal here).

Oh dear oh dear. Well, I guess I will start planning this weekend, though no matter when I start, its always a mad rush in the end!

Have you started your preparations yet?

Katie x

P.s. don't forget to enter the Katies Cards competition before the 11th of November - you could be in with the chance of having your idea made into a Christmas e card as well as a £15 ($20 Amazon voucher!). Please click here for more details!

An great place to find new interests and save your favourite things

Hi all,

I began using Pinterest a few months ago and since, I have been finding lots of new and interesting websites and 'things' on a daily basis.

Pinterest is basically an online pin board. When you register for an account, you get a blank pin board which you can start adding things to. You can start this straight away by looking at what other people have put on their pin boards and if you like it you can add it to yours. You can also find people that you like and follow them so that you can see what they are adding on a regular basis. Another great thing you can do is download a 'pin it' button on to your web browsers tool bar which allows you to add anything you like from across the whole internet if you like it. All you have to do it press this button when you're on a website or page that you like.

I know it sounds a bit weird, but it really is a lovely way to spend 20 minutes a day and really simple use (unlike other of these new fangled websites!) and a great way to keep reminders of things that you like in one place in a quick and simple way.

If you are interested, you can also have a look at my pin boards as I have set up my own account and I have been pin-boarding my heart out! Just visit http://pinterest.com/katiescards/ and you will find all of the things I have pinned. If you join yourself, be sure to let me know and we can follow each other!

A lovely chance encoutner

Hi all,

I love it when life throws something random your way and yesterday I had some very unexpected contact with someone new.

To cut a long story short, I was contacted by someone yesterday who wanted to let me know that there was a business on Facebook (The Supermums Craft Fair) using one of my e card images as a logo (the Supermum birthday e card).

I was quite shocked that someone was using it, but the most interesting part of this story is that when I looked into it, and contated Sarah (the lady who looks after the page) I found that she is doing something brilliant!

The Supermums Craft Fair is a place where craft makers can sell their goods on facebook in a 'virtual fair'. She makes her own crafts which you can have a look at here and as a craft maker, she has found it hard to make a living out of her produce and decided to set this page up to get other crafters together and help them to sell what they make!

I think this is a brilliant idea and is a great way of encouraging more people to be more proactive and more involved with crafts.

I am so happy to have met (online) this clever lady who has this brilliant and innovative idea and encourage all of you to have a look at her page as there are some beautiful handmade knick-knacks on there to buy and if you make crafts yourself, its also definitely worth a go selling them through the page also!
Supermum!

It was such an unexpected but very lovely encounter. I love it when things like this happen (though that is not permission to use any of my images without asking me first - this was a very special case!).

It thanksgiving in Canada today!

Hi all,

Canadians today are celebrating their thanksgiving and many will be getting ready to tuck into some traditional and delicious roasted turkey and pumpkin pie. I have always fancied trying pumpkin pie as it looks soooo delicious! I really like roasted pumpkin and pumpkin soup.

I came across this great article which you might like in the Guardian which compares pies made from different ingredients. You can read the full article here. Let me know if you have any tips!

mmmmmm pumpkin pie

Anyway, hope you're all having a great day!

Its the weekend!

Hi all,

Here in England we have had very bizarre weather for this time of year. The beginning of the week was scorching hot and the last couple of days have been freezing, and there was talk of snow in Scotland!

Whatever the weather, I am looking forward to the weekend, spending time with the kids, Nick and Plum and cooking a big roast on Sunday, though I don't think my yorkshire puddings will turn out as good as the ones in the picture!

What are you up to this weekend?

The beast of Busy park

Hello,

I live near the beautiful Bushy park and I am extremely lucky to be able to take Plum for a walk there every day and see the deer who live there. Its a really nice way to relax and get inspiration for new e cards.

You may or may not have seen my recentl blog post about the deer going into rutting season and roaring loudly at one another. Well, there has been quite a development...

In the last week or so, a few people have actually been attacked by the stags. It is very unusual behaviour. We have lived here for 14 years and never heard of such a thing happening and what is really odd about it is that the attacks seem to be completely unprovoked. The park does issue guidelines on conduct around the deer around rutting season, but it is basically be careful not to intimidate them. One man was attacked today from 200 yards away and had to be helped by passers-by.

There is speculation that it might be one stag who is attacking and locals have started to call him 'The Beast of Bushy Park'

A great website for inspiration!

Hi all!

I like to spend some of my spare time browsing the internet and looking for new ideas and inspiration for  e cards.

I came across this really interesting website that you might like called Daily Design Discovery.

They add a different product, picture, or something of interest every day and recently it has featured an interesting article about an autistic cartoonist in the New York Times, Eames wire-base tables, some sculpture, prints and paintings along with other objects such as the restored vintage typewritters by Kasbah Mod and the Vintage Beacon II/Whitehouse Camera.

Take a look, its a refreshing website and one that you will see something different!

Mmmmmm a lovely Nigella salmon and noodle recipe!

Hi all,

Nick's birthday was a couple of weeks ago now, but I decided to make this lovely Nigella dish for him and it was really delicious so I had to share it with you!

The dish was very aromatic and spicy and had marinated and fried salmon fillets and singapore noodles with vegetables. It had a lot of ingredients but actually didn't take that long to do once I got the preparation of chopping etc done.

(Nigella's) Seared Salmon with Singapore Noodles
You can find the ingredients and method on Nigella's lovely website here. If you don't like samlon I would still encourage you to try it, but you could subsitute the salmon for chicken. I do love Nigella recipes - are you a fan of hers too? Have you got any Nigella or your own favourite recipes that you want to share?

Autumn fun and don't forget the competition!

Hello,

Don't you just love autumn? I do, everyone is back at work/school /university after summer holidays feeling rested and ready to take on challenges of year ahead. Halloween is coming up followed swiftly by Fireworks night!

At the moment in Briton, leaves on the trees are turning into beautiful orangey, red and pink and they are lovely to look at. There is nothing more satisfying than walking though lots of leaves and this season really brings out the child in me and brings back memories of building dens, the excitement of playing outside in the dark, halloween, bonfire night and the anticipation that Christmas is coming! Its a magical time of year!

Racheal's Greek holiday and don't forget to enter the competition!

Hello all!

Racheal is going on holiday for a well deserved break to a Greek island on Sunday for a week. Her 3 months here have been very busy but she has done lots to push forward our e cards, including helping me to make sure I write this blog daily and write interesting things in it!

I have to say I'm rather jealous of her! I could do with a week on a Greek island sunning myself but with Molly and Joe still at school, we can only have a holiday during the school breaks.

Whilst she is away I will be getting on with some new e card designs, looking after the competion and answering e card queries.

I know I have gone on and on about it, but the competition closing date is not until next Friday so please enter. Apart from the fantastic £15 Amazon prize, it is also a chance for you to tell me your opinions and have some input into the new cards that are made.

Once again, all you have to do to enter is to choose your favourite Christmas ecard from our collection and then tell us why you like it on the Katies Cards Facebook page. For clearer instructions please take a look here.

Have a nice weekend!

Rita Hayworth

Its only on until the 23rd of October but I really want to see it. Have you been? If so what did you think?

A beautiful tree in Bushy park and a summer photograph

Hello there,

Summer has moved over to make space for autumn, old news I know, but it's a little sad for us here in Briton, who didn't get the summer we wanted and were drenched with rain for most of it!

I took this photo of a beautiful tree that I walk past every day on my walk with Plum that I want to share with you.

Do you know what type of tree it is? Please comment if you can work it out!

Beautiful tree in Bushy park

The picture was taken on a rare sunny summers day which is why the deer are taking refuge away froom the sun underneath it. I think this tree is beautiful, I love trees with red or dark leaves and couldn't resist taking a picture of it with my phone as I was walking past.

Today is Stepfamily day in the US - and don't forget to enter our competition!

Hello,

Did you know that today is National Stepfamily day in the United States? This day was set up in 1997 by Christy Borgeld who wanted to celebrate and support stepfamillies of the US nation, to help them to support their children and become strong family structures.

I think this is a lovely way to recognise the importance of the effort that many step-parents put into making family-life work and a great day to say thank you if you are part of a blended family.

I love days like these, where some part of life that can usually go unnoticed is brought to peoples attention.

Its almost the weekend! I'm really looking forward to relaxing! The competition has been very successful so far, but it doesn't close until the 30th of September, so if you haven't already, do make sure that you enter it  for your chance to win a £15 Amazon voucher!
