Beautiful hand-made gifts and knick-knacks that you might like...

Hi all,
This week as well as working hard and spending time with the kids, I have been searching around for a gift for my niece's 2nd birthday. I have been trying desperately not to go down the usual route and get her something that lots of other people will buy her and I was really struggling for new ideas so I decided to do a bit of hunting around on the internet. After what seemed liked an age, I eventually came across an adorable website selling some beautiful crafted cards, mugs, textiles, knitted toys and other interesting knick-knacks and I'm pleased to say I found something perfect for her!

She loves animals you see and I didn't want to buy her yet another soft toy, so when I came across these Japanese paper animal balloons I was over the moon!

She can have them hung in her bedroom and they'll look wonderful. They're made from a light paper, so they will float around the ceiling and look like they are flying or dancing!

The website was called www.petraboase.com and on further inspection I also came across some lovely baby clothes, handmade greetings cards (for those of you who use paper cards as well as e cards), wall art, home textiles. See some examples below:

I'm really looking forward to her birthday party at the weekend and giving her her present now.

I thought it would be nice to share this since it can be soo hard to buy presents sometimes. Let me know if you have come across any gems, I'm sure we'd all like to hear!

Hope you all have a great weekend,

Last weeks sad news showed the best and worst of humankind

Last week was filled with sad and distressing news. The news of Amy Winehouse' death, although to many, not a huge shock, was a premature end to an extremely talented life. Her poor family seem understandably devastated but it was nice to see that they took some comfort from the support they have received from her devoted fans. Its very hard to see someone so young struggle with an addiction and lose the battle, but one positive is the news that her father, Mitch Winehouse, is planning to set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation in order to help those struggling with addiction.

The terrible news about the Norwegian terror attacks is almost too ghastly to talk about. All those young peoples lives have been taken away from them by a man who has a deluded master plan. So unjust, so sad, but again heart warming to see a crowd of 150,000 of the Norwegian people coming together in Oslo for the 'rose march' to support each other, the devastated victims and their families members through a terrible time.
Its moments in life like these that truly show the worst attributes of the human condition but also show some of the best.

Sending love to all those out there troubled by these sad events.

Sending e cards saves the environment and your pennies!

Hi all,
I was doing a bit of rooting around on the internet this week and I managed to find some statistics that I thought you would find interesting...
  1. The average person sends approximately 30 cards a year
  2. Including postage, the majority of people spend around £88 a year on sending cards to loved ones
  3. Over 312,000 trees are cut down each year for greetings cards for the UK, USA and Australasia
I thought it was interesting that these figures seemed so high in a world where we are worrying both about climate change AND the Global Financial Crisis but there must be a reason that we, as a collective of human beings, feel it necessary to send messages to our family and loved ones on special occasions?

I know what my reasons for sending messages are; I like to make the special people in my life feel that they are significant to me. I want all of my loved ones to feel special at least twice a year and by remembering an occasion or a special day, I feel like I do this.

I am not one for buying expensive gifts. The gifts I give to my loved ones are either inexpensive tokens or (on the odd occasion) quite expensive items that are perfectly suitable for one special person in my life that I just couldn't possibly ignore, but whether the occasion requires a gift or not, one thing I always send is an ecard.
The cost of a subscription for e-cards is so little that its almost embarrassing to mention in comparison to paper cards. £7 to send as many cards as you like in one year, saving the average person £81 a year. Why would you ever want to send paper cards?

It a no-brainer for me. Especially when taking into consideration the affect cutting down trees is having on climate change...

Anyway, just some food for thought for you, please add your comments as I would love to know what you think of this information.

Have a nice weekend,
