A huge project, the site contains the huge Olympic stadium, Aquatics Centre, the Olympic village which is used for accommodation for athletes, a Velodrome and a white water centre. Take a look at this fantastic time-lapse video taken by the Olmpic committee, which shows you the stadium and surroundings under construction to completion;

The theme and name of the opening ceremony is 'Isles of Wonder'. It will commence at 9pm on Friday the 27th of July and will sure to be entertaining. Danny said:

Today we have added a fabulous new feature to the Katie's Cards website that allows you to see whether your e cards have been viewed or not in your account!

The list contains the name, email (or posted on Facebook), date sent, the name of the card you sent, the option to view the card AND whether it has been viewed! See the example below:

yummy hot cross buns - Easter treats. 2012.02.17.

I love a hot cross bun, I think they are very delicious and look forward to them at Easter time!

When I was younger, you could only buy them around Easter, but now they seem to be available all of the time. I still only buy them at Easter time!

There was a time that they were nearly banned from being made altogether. They were considered to have a dangerous hold over Catholics and Protestant England tried to ban them. Elizabeth I stopped this by passing a law allowing bakers to sell them at Easter and on Christmas.

Lots of people beleive that hot cross buns have special powers and the superstitions surround them include; buns made on Good Friday will not spoil for a year and that people should always keep one stored for medicinal purposes. It is also thought that a hot cross bun shared with a friend will help your friendship endure the coming year (this comes from a saying "Half for you, half for me, between us two, goodwill shall be") and some believe that they protect against shipwrecks, fires and baking bad bread and, should always be kissed before being eaten.

What a wonderful celebratory dish, seeped in history and tradition.

Mothering Sunday - Some interesting facts. 2012.02.07.

Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in many different forms since the Roman Empire. The day itself and the celebrations surrounding them have changed a number of times. The Roman celebration was called Hilaria and the day was all about honoring the mother goddess Cybele. This day eventually evolved into the Christian celebration of Laetare Sunday. This day took place on the 4th Sunday of Lent and entailed family visit's to their local Cathedral's or 'Mother Church'. Laetare Sunday was celebrated before the introduction of workers holidays, however most workers were permitted to have the day to visit church, making this day one of the only days of the year that whole families could get together and therefore extra special.

Popularity of this holiday waned by the 1920's and soon after, was replaced by 'Mothering Sunday' a day which was created by American Ann Jarvis, to help support mothers who had lost their sons and husbands in the war. The trend travelled overseas and was encouraged in the UK by Constance Penwick-Smith. The day quickly went from one of support and togetherness to a commercial one and saw many people cashing in on it (much to the dismay of Ann Jarvis who campaigned against the commercialisation of Mothers day for the rest of her life). People began to send Mothers day cards and gifts.

Today the tradition is more popular than ever. Last year there were over £100 billion spent on Mothers day gifts and cards and this figure is sure to grow. This is a special day and one in which we can show our appreciation to the woman in our life who has nurtured, cared and supported us when we couldn't do it for ourselves. Many people feel that this day is the day to say thank you and show their appreciation by sending a Mothers day e card, cooking a delicious meal for her, booking her a pedicure or simply taking her a bunch of tulips.

For those of you who don't know - Mothers day is on the 18th of March this year!

A cute Valentines Day ecard. 2012.02.02.

This cute Valentines Day ecard was made to symbolise that being in love with someone who loves you back, can makes your life better. Using a tall lady Giraffe and a chubby little wild boar as the characters, I also wanted to make an animation to show that 'opposites attract'.

The wild boar finds a way to show the lovely lady Giraffe his gift of a romantic bunch of flowers and with help from Cupid, wins the Giraffes' heart.

Egg hunting at Easter time, why did it start? 2012.02.02

Egg hunting is a fun Easter activity played by children all over the world many of whom believe that the Easter Bunny has hidden chocolate eggs especially for them to play the game collect delicious chocolate treasures.

Working in the greetings industry, I have always been curious as to the origins of such traditions and thought I would have a hunt around to find out where this activity began and why. Having looked around I have found that there are strong symmetries between each religious, cultural or folklore origins of this holiday. The season of spring itself has always been characterised by the symbol of an egg (a new beginning) but the symbol is also used by Christians to symbolise the resurrection.

On researching via the internet, I found countless explanations for the origins of the egg-hunt. The most interesting of these explanations are:

  • This is a derivative of the German tradition of Osterhase in which German children believed that an Easter hare layed eggs in baskets that were left outside of their houses. The tradition was taken to America and evolved from there.
  • That this activity began with the rise of Christianity. I found two opposing stories implicating Pagans and Christians of persecution of the other. The stories suggest that as the religion (Paganism or Christianity) was looked down upon, people practised traditions in secret (as eggs are symbols of both then it is hard to work out which version of the story is true) and therefore instead of exchanging eggs, they buried them, to be found by their loved ones. Members of the opposing religion realised this and began to bribe children to seek out the eggs in order to find out who was practising so that they would then be subject to persecution.

Egg hunting now takes places across the globe by people who are perhaps unaware of its origins. This, along with the vast array of Easter traditions that are practised over the world, which now includes sending Easter e cards, brings great joy, especially to children. In years to come, will we still be engaging in these wonderful activities or will they have evolved into something else?

Great customer service goes a long, long way. 2012.01.26

Hi all,

Fans of the Katie's Cards Facebook business page will have seen that I shared a post from Racheal which she thought I would like. The post was of a photograph of a letter written on behalf on Lily Robinson aged 3 and a half to Sainbury's about their Tiger bread and had a picture of the wonderful response from Sainsbury's (see below):

Correspondence from Lily to Sainsbury's

These two letters delighted me and I couldn't resist sharing them with the Katie's Cards fans!Firstly Lily's letter is fabulous and I love the fact that she asked this question - what a bright young girl she must be! But mostly, the response from Sainsbury's is delightful and I'm sure that Lily was very pleased.

This is a fantastic example of the high quality customer service that I love and that I aspire to for Katie's Cards. I believe in this digital age it is incredibly important to have a human response to build trust. It instills confidence and comfort to know that you can ask a person to explain something to you if the need ever occur. We've all been in a position at one point or another whereby our expectations have not been met when purchasing a service or product and that is not a positive position to be in. It instills confidence and comfort to know that you can ask a person to explain something to you if the need ever occur.

I just wanted to share this with anyone who didn't see my post yesterday. It brought a smile to my face and I'm sure it will to yours!

A bit of fun is a great way to raise a smile on any occasion and fun is definitely on the menu for birthday time and this is exactly the reason that we like to make a very wide selection of birthday ecards for your to choose from which include cheerful and fun styles.

In the name of fun, I thought that I would share this great website with you. You put your date of birth in it and it tells you the number 1 song on that day! My song was Wonderland by The Shadows. Have a try - its good fun! Click here to visit the website.

Once you find out what song was number 1 you can then order a specially framed and personalised record as a gift, though they are quite expensive.

Please leave a comment and let me know what your song is! Below is a fun birthday e card from Katie's Cards that you might like to send to someone who has a birthday coming up. I hope you like it!

Romantic ideas for Valentines day. 2012.01.23.

Hi all,

Valentines day is celebrated all over the world by people who like to show their feelings of love by sending romantic messages with gifts of love poems, flowers, chocolates and an assortment of other gifts.  People like to lavish their loved-ones with romantic evenings spent in restaurants, hotels or at home with special food, candles and champagne.

As the sentiment of Valentines day is showing how much you love someone (or your interest in them romantically) there is no need to spend £100's on gifts and, if planned well, you can have an extremely romantic Valentines day without overspending. Here are some ideas of my own to help you plan. I hope you find them useful, and please comment if you have any ideas you would like to share!

Katie's top tips for an inventive, romantic, cost-effective Valentines day:
  • Find photographs of the two of you throughout your relationship. Put them together into a special album and give this as a gift. You can make a beautiful and smart photo-book here at tesco.com. They cost from £5.
  • If you are poetic, then write the one you love a poem and incorporate it into your Valentines day ecard, print it onto some pretty paper and give it as a gift or hide it somewhere that your loved-one will find it. If you're not poetic, take a look here for some ideas for romantic poems.
  • Plan a special Valentines meal. Make sure to include your guest's favourite food, or if you want to try something different take a browse through BBC food's ideas for Valentines day menu's here.
  • Do one small thing on Valentines day that is unexpected. Send flowers, plan a ad-hoc dinner, meet your loved-one after work and escort them home, buy a bottle of something sparkling to have with dinner (you can get your hands on some great Prosecco's which are much cheaper than champagne and taste fantastic - I actually prefer it to champagne)
  • Dress up your dinner table to look romantic, buy a couple of roses to scatter the petals on the table cloth, rose scented pot-pouri and candles will look fantastic and fairly low cost
  • Get your kids involved! Here are some great tips on how to get your kids involved with this celebration - they can make cards and gift boxes as well as table decorations!
I hope you like these ideas!

How you can take part in the Chinese New Year celebrations. 2012.01.16.

Hi all,

Chinese New Year will take place on the 23rd of January this year and the coming year will be the year of the dragon. In Chinese mythology dragons are signs of power, luck and strength and so I think you will agree that this is a good start to the year!

A great time to send your loved ones Chinese new year e cards and well wishes, this is also a fantastic chance to get involved with the celebrations by visiting a New Years parade (many cities will have street events planned for this occasion click here for some information on what is happening across the globe here) or by holding your own Chinese New Year event.

The legend of the first New Year begins with 'Nian' - a mythical creature that terrorised villages on News Years Day by eating crops, livestock and villagers. People realised that if they left food out for Nian, he would not hunt for anything else. They also realised that the creature was scared of the colour red and from then on, people have left red lanterns and spring rolls outside of their doors to warn Nian away.

Celebrated for a number of days, many famillies will get together for a special meal on new years eve. Traditional food includes fish and chicken dishes, as well as dumplings, mandarin oranges, melon, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, noodles and many other dishes. On this night gifts are also exchanged with friends and relatives and elders will give money to younger generations within red envelopes.

This is a magical celebration full of tradition and myth and great fun to get involved with. If you want to hold your own celebration, here are some ideas of things that you can do:
  • Visit your local Chinese supermarket to buy some red lanterns to hang outside of your home, or if you do not have somewhere you can go locally - there are some beautiful ones available to buy online here at Asianideas.com
  • Make some fact - cards that you can put on your table for your guests to learn about the myths and traditions of the event.  This is a great way to get kids involved in the occasion as well as help them learn about it as they can research the traditions, fill the cards with interesting facts and then decorate them using their new knowledge.
  • Make some of your own fresh and crispy spring rolls. You can hang some outside (kids will love doing that) or just have them with your wonderful dinner. Here is a great recipe I found by Ching-He Huang
  • Make a selection of other traditional dishes to celebrate with your loved ones. Click here for a fantastic list of recipes that you might like, alternatively you could try finding somewhere to buy pre-made food or order in (if you can find anywhere that is open!)
  • An alternative to gift-giving for your guests is to buy red envelopes for each of your dinner guests (you will find them in your local stationary store or if not you can get a great selection here on Amazon) and fill them with some chocolate coins. This is a cheap yet fun way to honor the tradition.
  • Ask your dinner guests to dress in red
  • Add more excitement to your celebration by setting off fireworks (safely) in your garden
I hope you have a fantastic time celebrating!

Please do share any tips of advice by commenting, I love to have your feedback.
