yummy hot cross buns - Easter treats. 2012.02.17.

I love a hot cross bun, I think they are very delicious and look forward to them at Easter time!

When I was younger, you could only buy them around Easter, but now they seem to be available all of the time. I still only buy them at Easter time!

There was a time that they were nearly banned from being made altogether. They were considered to have a dangerous hold over Catholics and Protestant England tried to ban them. Elizabeth I stopped this by passing a law allowing bakers to sell them at Easter and on Christmas.

Lots of people beleive that hot cross buns have special powers and the superstitions surround them include; buns made on Good Friday will not spoil for a year and that people should always keep one stored for medicinal purposes. It is also thought that a hot cross bun shared with a friend will help your friendship endure the coming year (this comes from a saying "Half for you, half for me, between us two, goodwill shall be") and some believe that they protect against shipwrecks, fires and baking bad bread and, should always be kissed before being eaten.

What a wonderful celebratory dish, seeped in history and tradition.
